Italian law requires all foreign students living in Italy to have medical insurance. International health insurance must be purchased in your home country.
Medical Insurance Overview
EU students must bring the European health insurance card.
If you don’t get an international health insurance before you leave your country, then you must buy the Italian Heath insurance as soon as you arrive in Italy. This policy is available for foreign students with INA Assitalia insurance company.
INA Italian Health Insurance
This INA Italian Health Insurance covers Emergency hospital care only and does not include long hospital stays, doctors or specialists visits or prescriptions. Therefore, if you need a comprehensive international travel health insurance policy, you must purchase this in your country prior to your arrival in Italy. Then be sure to bring the copy of that policy and the ID card with you.
Emergency Health Insurance
If, however, an emergency insurance is sufficient for your stay in Italy, you can purchase the INA Assitalia insurance at the local Post Office. It costs € 38.73 for six months or € 77.47 for one year. The receipt of this insurance purchase must be submitted to the Questura when you apply for your “Permit of Stay”.
